I painted the diy farmhouse bench with maison blanche chalk paint in ivory. Because of the length, the side rails are 1 x 6 to support any weight in the middle — plus the height of the rails is 1/3 of the overall height of the bench making for visually pleasing proportions. The farmhouse bench is designed to work with this farmhouse table, but there is no reason you could not modify the dimensions or use it as a coffee table or outdoor bench.
The smooth wood bench is offset with the details of the patterned back of the bench.
